On the Turntable:: Go Insane - The Doors

Hi,
Just joined the community and I have a pretty dumb question. My wife has given me her acoustic guitar. It has no strings. How do I know, just by looking at it, if it needs steel or nylon strings? Apparently it had steel strings but someone told her it's supposed to have nylon strings. Is there is way for me to tell?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that. According to those pictures it's a steel strung, which is a bit of a bummer since I want to learn classical guitar but it'll do to get me started.

I'll head off to the shops later and get some strings.

you can still learn and play classical music on it, the tuning is identical on both instruments, only the tone and the feel of the neck and strings differ (steel string guitars will generally be rougher on your fingers, but have a thinner neck)

you can put nylon strings on a steel stringed guitar
but can't put steel strings on a classical guitar
